Tierra del Vino
Another wine-producing region shared between Zamora and Salamanca is Zamora’s DO, Terra del Vino, which hugs the Duero as it passes through the province. It covers 1,800 square kilometres, distributed among 46 municipalities in Zamora and ten in Salamanca. There are 700 hectares registered in the D.O
The image of a wine-producing region is joined to its landscape, in surroundings in which the growing cycle of its grapes develops where men and women historically inherit their culture. The Terra del Vino de Zamora DO is based on these three pillars and coexist with wineries and wine makers.
One difference in this Denomination of Origin is that it contains the highest concentration of old vines in the country since phylloxera did not significantly affect the region. It is also the only place name in Spain that refers to the “Terra del Vino.”
The DO Terra del Vino de Zamora has made a profound technological change in its wineries. All are newly constructed. The 210 vine growers have made a strong commitment to responsible and professional wine-growing to obtain quality wines. Having achieved this decisive step for the future of their wines, the DO can focus on the cultural phenomenon of enotourism.
The main variety is the Tempranillo grape, although the Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon, which are authorized, are common in the vineyards. Varieties of notable whites are the principle grapes of Malvasía and Verdejo as well as Moscatel, which is in high demand for sweet wines. Authorized varieties are the Albillo, Palomino and Godello.
The DO requires that white wines be made with a minimum of 60% of main varieties, rosé with at least 60% Tempranillo, and the claret with at least 30% Tempranillo. Reds must contain at least 75% Tempranillo.
